New Meeting Day!

Happy 2018! We recently received confirmation from our meeting place - our new meeting day is every third WEDNESDAY of every month! This is a change away from every third Thursday, so please tell your friends and mark your calendars!

We enjoyed Thursdays, but Baby Cafe at Virginia Baptist Hospital meets every Tuesday and Thursday from 10-12. The lactation consultants there do an excellent (and free) job with the new parents that attend. LLL of Lynchburg hopes that these breastfeeding parents (any breastfeeding parents!) attend LLL monthly meetings in addition to Baby Cafe and/or once they feel they no longer need Baby Cafe.

I also want to stress that breastfeeding mothers that want to attend meetings don’t actually need a breastfeeding problem in order to attend! Come and socialize among other breastfeeding parents! We certainly provide support and help troubleshoot, but we are also a friendly group where you can come hang and meet one another and one another’s children.

We will continue to meet at the very welcoming First Christian Church on Rivermont Ave, close to Virginia Baptist Hospital. (Note that LLL is completely non-sectarian - First Christian allows us to meet in their very comfortable room.) Rivermont Ave is served by Lynchburg city bus line, otherwise park in the back. We gather on the third floor towards the right. The meetings are led by me (Terese) and Sarah. Please note, we follow Lynchburg city school closings regarding bad weather. If schools are closed or delayed, that month’s LLL meeting is also cancelled. Pregnant moms-to-be and children are always welcome to attend our meetings. And there is never any charge to attend.

I hope to see you in February!

What to Expect at a Meeting

Have you ever attended an LLL meeting? Sometimes it's difficult to get out of the house with a new baby, but we never require punctuality. That's the first thing you need to know about us. Our group runs the official meeting (breastfeeding plus additional LLL philosophy) from 10am - 11. Most times, moms stay afterwards to talk about off-topics and to socialize. But arrive when you can, and slide on in.

We generally run our meetings like baby cafes. One of the Leaders will start the meeting by introducing themselves and sharing how many children they have and their ages. The Leader also notes that every mom is the expert on her family. Take home the ideas she finds helpful, and ignore the rest. Then we open up the floor to questions and concerns anyone is having. We like moms to share their own problem solving experiences, or their support if that is what's needed instead of suggestions for solutions. If LLL philosophy isn't included, a Leader will add further thought before moving on to the next mom.

Depending on how many moms are present, and whether they are brand-new to LLL or experienced, the discussions will change meeting to meeting. But we generally get lots of discussion regarding supply, sore nipples, sleeping through the night, eating solids, and weaning.

Our main goal is to support the moms that seek us out for our suggestions and our support. That's it. There's no "type" of mom, or parent, for that matter that fits a LLL mold. We're single, we're married, we work, we stay at home, we're straight, we're gay, we have lots of money and we also live frugally. And we breastfeed. (Or are pregnant and very interested!) Come as you are and bring your children. See you in July!

Welcome 2017

It is with hope and happy hearts that we welcome 2017. Our eminent co-leader Catherine retired at the end of 2016 after 25 YEARS of LLL service. We are happy to report she will drop in on our monthly meetings as she is able. We also welcomed a new Leader into our Lynchburg group: Sarah. A mother to three and also a nurse with current hospital lactation consultant experience, we are very excited to work with Sarah.

Please note our updated contact information, and meeting dates. We always meet the third Thursday of every month at First Christian Church on Rivermont Ave. LLL is unaffiliated with any religious organizations, although we are grateful to First Christian for generously allowing us to use their space. As such, all are welcome! Bring your children and your desire to learn about breastfeeding. There is ample parking at the church, and the church area is served by the bus line.

Our January gathering is tomorrow! Please come!

LLL of Lynchburg 2016

Happy New Years, moms! We hope this year finds you and yours happy and healthy. LLL of Lynchburg has fun happenings this year - our blogspot page that you are reading right now has been updated for 2016. Please note we always meet the third Thursday of the month at First Christian Church on Rivermont Ave very near to VA Baptist hospital. Park in the back, and take the elevator or the stairs up to the third floor. We meet in the comfy, red room to the right. While we thank and appreciate First Christian Church for allowing us the use of their room, LLL is not associated with this church or any other. A million thanks, First Christian, for sharing your space with us every month!

Our Lynchburg group has a new Leader! Jessica was accredited in November and we are so excited and grateful as she is an excellent resource. Incidentally, all of the leader information has been updated. Please contact one of us whenever you have a breastfeeding need, and know we will respond within 24 hours, generally much much quicker than that.

Sometimes moms need more mother-to-mother support than meeting once a month with our LLL group. We have you covered! Sarah C. is our playgroup coordinator. Please find us and like us (La Leche League of Lynchburg) on Facebook to receive play date notices. A link is to the right of this post. Katherine S. is our Mommy Me yoga instructor. This class generally meets every Tuesday morning. Like Katherine's page on Facebook to receive class notifications. Her link is to the right also.

Finally, we have a mother that has created an Instagram account and a fun campaign called #lynchburgbreastfeeds. Like our Insta account @lynchburgvalll and tag your breastfeeding photo with #lynchcburgbreastfeeds and Azalea could regram.

Thank you so much to our LLL moms for supporting our group, especially Sarah C., Azalea, and Katherine. And thank you to the moms that continue to participate in our monthly meetings - we appreciate your presence!

Beware the Peppermint

We are deep into December and we hope everyone is enjoying this holiday season. Hanukkah just finished and Christmas is upon us. It's been pretty warm but totally possible for us to ready for winter. It's not always necessary to wear sweaters and drink hot chocolate outside with this glorious sunshine, but that time will come soon enough.

One of the special treats a lot of us look forward to eating are candy canes. They are relatively low in calories (if you have just one) and are fat-free. But they are loaded with peppermint. Unfortunately, this holiday herb (and it's other festive cousin, sage) inhibits milk production. Every woman is different so we're not entirely sure how much peppermint it takes to affect supply, but it is certainly something to be aware of when choosing holiday treats.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from us to you! And please join us this Thursday at 10 am for our final meeting of 2015.

Become an LLL Lynchburg Member!

It's so lovely to find a group of moms that support your mothering and you and your child's breastfeeding journey. La Leche League is a group of trained mothers of breastfed children that are available to help moms when they encounter difficulties or when they are in need of solid information. We do this over the phone and in email. La Leche League also holds monthly meetings, and it is through these meetings that moms receive answers, but they also receive support from Leaders and other attending mothers.

Breastfeeding moms don't always have technical questions. I'd argue that many moms just need to know that what they are experiencing (the tough parts) are temporary, that they aren't the first moms to be utterly exhausted. That all of us, at one point or another, wonder when the heck this weaning is actually going to happen. Some moms find their tribe in La Leche League.

Leaders are volunteers. We try not to spend our own money on incidentals, and certainly not on Leadership dues, but it can be expensive. Besides the dues, we have quite a few mothers pursuing leadership, which is so very exciting, but also an added expense. While we do hold fundraisers, most often in the form of profit-shares, you can help bolster our Treasury by becoming an LLL Lynchburg member. The cost is $30. The money ensures that our group remains strong and a resource to mothers in our area that need and desire our support.

If you have been touched by our local group, please consider becoming a member. We accept cash and checks made out to LLL Lynchburg. Please contact Terese, at terese118@gmail.com with any questions, or for more information. Thank you for consideration!
